Nature Programs

The Rocks Estate's Educational Nature Adventures offer ways to experience the White Mountains as the natives do - human and otherwise. Under the tutelage of a knowledgeable guide, visitors can roam the 1,400-acre sustainable Christmas tree farm and education center in active exploration of this historic estate. Outdoor Adventures are designed to reveal the Rocks' - and northern New Hampshire's - ecology, history, and culture through various tours covering moose, bear and deer; amphibians; turkeys; snowshoeing; pruning wild apple trees; maple syrup-making and more. Outdoor Adventures are available year-round for visitors seeking nature-oriented seasonal activities. Trails are moderate terrain for most levels of walkers. Dog Sled Rides

Dog Sled RidesLooking for a unique winter outdoor activity? Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel from Jefferson, NH, has partnered with the Forest Society to offer sled dog adventures at the Rocks Estate. An exhilarating and educational experience touring scenic fields of Christmas trees and our extensive trail system. Offered during the Christmas season and throughout the winter. Snowshoe Walks

Take an easy, guided (by a Forest Society staffer or volunteer) snowshoe through rolling hills and scenic, woodsy trails. Trails and hikes vary - some events may include a meal, or s'mores by the firepit, but they will always be a nature-oriented, memorable experience.

June–Columbus Day: The historic 1906 Sawmill/Pig Pen building has recently been transformed into a charming Sugar House and Maple Museum. This interactive learning center explains the history of this unique (oh so sweet) New England treat.The NH Maple Experience Learn the history of maple syrup, about maple trees, tree tapping and the boiling process. A one-of-a-kind exhibit displays sugar-making equipment and an extensive collection of artifacts. Fun and educational for all ages. Handicap accessible.

Maple Sugaring Season: Scheduled weekends in March & April. Maple sugaring signals the end of a long New Hampshire winter and brings bright thoughts of spring. Our Sugar House and Maple Museum come alive with actual demonstrations of the sugar-making process as tapped trees on the property give up their sap for a sweet transformation. Learn how to ID and tap a maple tree, take a horse-drawn ride reminiscent of early days on the farm, then satisfy your craving for a sampling with the traditional syrup, donut and pickle treat. For those arriving with a heartier appetite, pancakes with (of course!) real maple syrup and accompaniments will be dished up in the main building.

The care and pruning of wild apple trees can have many far-reaching benefits. Not only does it ensure consistent fruiting and tree health, a productive tree is a habitat resource for a long list of birds and wild animals. Your short investment in time will be rewarded all year as strong, healthy trees provide valuable nourishment to both you and your backyard friends. Hands-on demonstration, location varies. Wildflower FestivalWildflower Festival

The Forest Society invites wildflower enthusiasts to the Rocks Estate for this popular and educational walk through historic forest trails. The day marks the Annual Wildflower Festival, with a full slate of fun activities planned at this turn-of-the-century protected reserve. More info ->

Walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing tours at The RocksTrail System

The Rocks Estate houses several miles of trails. We encourage you to visit and hike one of our four trails, which are open 365 days per year, from dawn 'til dusk. The Forest Society welcomes foot traffic, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. We ask you refrain from using wheeled or motorized vehicles. Nature Programs

The Rocks Estate also offers lectures on nature-oriented topics of interest to our visitors. These talks, conducted by Forest Society staff, volunteers, or invited guests cover a gamut of subjects from wildlife to conservation to trees (Christmas and others). You may be given a tour of the estate if the subject warrants it. Programs may take place either at the Rocks Estate or other locations. Call 603-444-6228 for details. Have you ever wondered what's making all that noise in the spring pools as the days get warmer? Come to The Rocks Estate where Forest Society staff, volunteers, or special guest presenters will explore the wonderful world of vernal ponds. This popular annual workshop will include an opportunity to see live amphibians and their eggs. For workshop dates see calendar for April.

Discover some of the wildlife of New Hampshire with our staff and volunteers. Come discover secrets of the natural world with hands-on exhibits including antlers and pelts, while enjoying intriguing educational facts about the animals in New Hampshire.

Turkey NestTurkey

Wild turkeys were extirpated in several states, including New Hampshire, in the early 1900s. Following a huge conservation effort, the species has bounced back with great success. If you've ever wondered how turkeys got their name, where they sleep, or why they gobble, join the Forest Society staff and volunteers to learn all about these magnificent birds.
